How to type symbols and letters with accents
Did you know your keyboard can type more than just letters? Here’s how to type accents and special characters on Windows, Mac, and mobile devices.
🪟 Windows (Alt Codes)
If your keyboard has a Numeric Keypad:
- Turn on Num Lock.
- Hold ALT, type the number code, then release ALT.
Examples:
- é → ALT + 130
- ñ → ALT + 164
- ü → ALT + 129
- ¿ → ALT + 0191
- ™ → ALT + 0153
- © → ALT + 0169
✅ Works in most apps like Word, Outlook, and browsers.
📄 Microsoft Word Shortcuts
If you don’t have a Numeric Keypad, use Word shortcuts:
- é → CTRL + ‘ (apostrophe), then e
- ê → CTRL + SHIFT + ^, then e
- ñ → CTRL + SHIFT + ~, then n
- ë → CTRL + SHIFT + :, then e
✅ Only works in Microsoft Word.
🍎 Mac Shortcuts
Use the OPTION key:
- é → OPTION + e, then e
- ñ → OPTION + n, then n
- ü → OPTION + u, then u
- ç → OPTION + c
- ¿ → OPTION + SHIFT + ?
- ¡ → OPTION + 1
💡 Tip: Hold a letter key to see accent options (works in most apps).
📱 Smartphones
Just hold down the letter key (like e or n) and choose the accented version from the pop-up.
