Microsoft has announced that Microsoft Publisher will reach end of life in October 2026 and will no longer be included with Microsoft 365. After October 1, 2026, Microsoft 365 subscribers will no longer be able to open, edit, install, or access Publisher through their Microsoft 365 subscription.
What Does This Mean?
If you currently use Publisher (pub) files for flyers, newsletters, brochures, signs, business cards, or other documents, you should begin planning to move those files to a supported format before the retirement date. Microsoft recommends converting Publisher files to PDF for long-term viewing and archiving, or to Word if future editing is required.
What You Should Do Now
- Review any workflows that currently rely on Microsoft Publisher.
- Locate and identify important Publisher (pub) files stored on your computer, network shared drives, OneDrive, or SharePoint.
- Convert files that must be retained to PDF and/or Word formats.
- Begin using alternative Microsoft 365 applications for new content creation.
Recommended Alternatives
Microsoft recommends the following replacement applications:
- Word for newsletters, forms, labels, envelopes, letterhead, invoices, and programs.
- PowerPoint for flyers, banners, signs, posters, and certificates.
- Word or PowerPoint for brochures, business cards, calendars, and greeting cards.
Key Dates
- October 1, 2026 – Microsoft Publisher will no longer be available to Microsoft 365 subscribers.
- October 13, 2026 – Support ends for Publisher included with Office LTSC 2021 and Office 2021.
